Dr. Tomasi Atrus is a man of average build normally clad in fine clothing befitting of a doctor once of the realm. He favours long coats and silk shirts, and wears his hair long and black. His eyes are often hidden behind a pair of circular crystal spectacles.
Atrus had what some would call the perfect life. The wealthy son of a Juche mining baron, he had been sent to the best schools in the Realm, and made a fine living for his fine wife, Elaine, and fine children, Joran and Samus.
That is, until that all-too-fateful day when he was called upon to aide a military camp at Chanos that had recently been attacked (unsuccessfully) by a particularly ambitious band of sea-mercenaries - though they did not succeed in their raid, the mercenaries wounded many men, and medics from all over the Realm were called to aide. When Atrus arrived, he happened upon a particularly injured man upon death's door. Atrus exalted in a burst of essence as he delved into celestial medicine on instrinct to save the dying soldier - Atrus stablized the patient.
Unfortunately for him, this very clearly revealing his recently exalted self to the Wyld Hunt.
As the soldiers converged upon him, he instinctually sorcered himself into a walking man of bronze, invulnerable to the soldier's attacks - who quickly gave up chase as Atrus fled on foot all the way back to Juche.
When he arrived home, he prepared to flee the Realm - as he did, he was drawn to his father's collection of antiquities, from which he raided a pair of bracers with a mysterious gem imbedded in them. He then gathered the rest of his belongings that he could take with him and left, leaving behind a simple and cryptic note to his wife;
Dearest Elaine;
It was out of my control. I've fled for your own protection. I fear I shall never return. I beg of you, no matter what they try to tell you... I am still the man I was.
I will always love you.

And with that, Atrus fled into the mountains, to escape the realm through the vast network of caves - where he ran into an Immaculate Monk and several short and stocky 'folk' who were interested in his bracer's mysterious gem. Joining them in their quest, he found others like him...
