Stormchaser Compass
Artifact 1, Attunement 2 motes
Repair 2
A common utility artifact for wayfarers and merchants, stormchaser compasses have been in standard use since the First Age. In appearance, they are all ordinary-sized compasses made of steel and white jade; however, they do not have lodestones inside. Instead, they each contain five small blue jade needles, which ordinarily lie dormant on the bottom of the compass. When a storm is brewing, one of the needles will pull upwards, glowing and pointing towards the source of the storm.
Needles are capable of detecting any storm within 50 miles, and can detect a mundane stormfront brewing twelve hours in advance. Magically-created stormfront are detected as soon as they begin significantly building (time will vary depending on the method used). Each needle will point closer to the edge of the compass the further away the stormfront is, and the glow inside them will widen from a spark (twelve hours in advance) until the entire needle is glowing softly (as the storm begins). A stormchaser compass can only track true storms; mild wind, rain, or snow will not trigger them. They can track the five largest storms within the 50 miles, but most users believe that if you're in a situation where there are more storms than that, something is very wrong anyway.
