Miles Nigel Schrodinger
Setting and Introduction
In his youth, Miles Schrodinger had a family. Or what he could call a family. Consisting of his father and him, actually. From when he was 8, daily training. Which was followed by introduction in a group of spies led by his father. Then, as he turned 18, his father's associates actually committed mutiny while Miles was away on an important assignment. Frustrated, he arranged for it to be his last mission for them, and fell into misery and apathy. It was in this very misery that he discovered thaumaturgy. Documents for it, he illegally acquired, while he gathered his life expenses with petty crimes. He showed the wonders of it to a few of his friends who came to appreciate it for what it was worth, and together, they studied, and eventually formed a camaraderie of crime.
As he turned 44, as an experienced thaumaturge and leading council member of a network of thaumaturge spies, called the Ring, and located in the surroundings of Arjuf, Schrodinger's life changed when his collaborators found an orphaned girl wandering in an Eastern coastal town. Sensing her preternal gifts for Essence manipulation, they left her to Schrodinger's care and collectively pressured him into taking her as a disciple. Being by far the best of them all, and passionate about passing knowledge over to the less experienced, he gladly accepted the rowdy and undisciplined girl as his apprentice. Over time, he learned that his student's masterful use of Essence came not from being merely gifted but from being of the Unclean Solar Anathema. Being a cynic, or perhaps more courageous than most, he became determined to tame off the demon and force it back upon the righteous path, perhaps making something of use out of her. The girl's name, incidentally, was Noemi .
Invigorated by his new student's joie de vivre, Schrodinger took care of her and tried to raise her as best he could. Then one day, he was summoned, along with his apprentice, by a contact who, he had gathered, had a very profitable assignment in line for him or his goons. It was very important to bring the girl, though, and so he smelled something was amiss. The old man, named Isenberg as it would become apparent, had also gathered three other people, who finally ended up being Solar Anathema as well. As the meeting progressed, the assignment was revealed; they were to investigate Thorns as its destiny had suddenly vanished from the sky. Schrodinger being somewhat of an astrological savant, he had also remarked such a change but never felt the need to investigate it further. This contract would bring in substantial profit to the spy network, though, and so, he gladly accepted. The meeting was abruptly cut off, however, by Realm forces (most likely, the Wyld Hunt) barging in on it. After a swift battle, in which the old man's martial prowess was revealed, the hangar where the meeting had been held became but a ruined heap, and so, Schrodinger, his apprentice Noemi , and their companions Javane , Shades of Moving Waters and The Feather , swiftly embarked on a long and arduous journey.
