It appears that one of the main rationales for using static defense in Second Edition was to speed play by eliminating defensive rolling. This benefit is largely eliminated by the existence of roll adders like the First Excellency, which add defensive rolling right back into the game. Under this variation, all defensive roll adders are treated as pool adders instead. Using this variant does not change the average effect of stunts and the First Excellency, but eliminates their variability, as well as minimum and maximum contribution. Note that First and Second Excellencies do not behave exactly the same way in this case because, now being a pool adder, the First would be applied at a different point in the Order of Modifiers (ex2e.124) than the Second. In most cases, however, the result of both would become identical.
