Emerald Wind grew up in Cherak, where he lived until recently. His mother, Mighty Heaven, was a devout follower of the Immaculate Order. His father, Noble Watcher, was less interested in the religion, but didn’t interfere as Mighty Heaven raised their children to be faithful to Immaculate doctrine.

Emerald Wind was always fascinated by stories of the First Age, stories of the mighty Exalted and how they defeated the seemingly unstoppable Anathema. He ravenously devoured any old stories the bards told, any writings that gave a glimpse of that bygone era. He and his friends sometimes played a game where one of them pretended to be Anathema, and the rest pretended to be monks, or even the Scarlet Empress herself, trying to take him down before he destroyed the world.

The older kids, though, made fun of him for being such a bookworm, and beat him up on a regular basis. After one particularly bad beating, he realized he needed to learn to defend himself. He began to train his body as well as his mind.

Emerald Wind continued his academic studies. When the public libraries didn’t have enough for him, he started snooping around for whatever private libraries he could find, and tried to get in good with its owner. Sometimes it worked, but other times he found himself having to break into their place just to read their books. He got caught in the act more often than not. He was chased out of plenty of libraries, got his ass kicked a few times, and was even arrested often enough for the Cherak authorities to start recognizing him. After a while, they just shook their heads, laughing, as if to say “what are we going to do with you?”

By the time he was twenty, Emerald Wind had a reputation for being one of the most knowledgeable mortals around. At first, he didn’t even know how much more he knew than the average person, but as more and more people pumped him for information, he began to realize how uneducated they were. That bothered him, because he never felt like he knew enough, but if he couldn’t go to others for more knowledge, where could he go?

Of course, the Exalted knew more than he did, and they were spiritually in tune with the Immaculate Dragons to boot. But he was for the most part beneath their notice. He considered becoming a monk just for the teaching, but he didn’t like the control the Immaculates put on that knowledge. It was around this time he realized how much he loved helping people learn things they didn’t know. So he decided to become a teacher instead of going back to being a student.

His reputation increased. Eventually, a scavenger lord named Blue Tear heard of him and paid him for any clues he might have that led to a treasure that was supposedly sealed in a long-forgotten Anathema tomb. Emerald Wind’s information proved helpful, so Blue Tear kept returning for more information. Eventually, Blue Tear began taking him on his expeditions. After each quest was completed, Emerald Wind would return to Cherak, where he’d resume his teaching until the scavenger lord was ready to put together another expedition. Little did he know how much these expeditions would change his life.

He never had much reason to study medicine until one of the grunts on an expedition was mortally wounded by a trap in a tomb they were trying to enter. Emerald Wind felt they should have been able to save him. Knowledge is supposed to help people, not kill them. He began to study medicine so perhaps he could do something about it next time someone was mortally wounded near him.

Blue Tear’s expeditions also brought him into close contact with spirits. Emerald Wind realized there’s a wealth of untapped knowledge, since the Immaculates insisted people not talk to them. Yet they were the only living witnesses of the First Age that had always fascinated him so. The more he thought about it, the more he realized he couldn’t resist. He began making deals with spirits for whatever knowledge he could gain from them.

This was how he learned that the demons they called “Anathema” were really just another kind of Exalted. And not just any kind of Exalted—it seems they were the rightful rulers of this world, and the Dragon Blooded killed them and assumed their position. The spirits didn’t seem to have any love for the Solar Exalted, but they liked the Dragon Blooded even less. At least they could respect the Solars. The Dragon Blooded were more like toddlers playing with essence cannons.

Emerald Wind began to teach the true nature of the Solars to his students. One of his students must’ve had connections with the Cult of the Illuminated, because they paid him a visit. A man named Compassionate Plough told him that what he was teaching his students was similar to what the Cult believed, but also warned him to keep quiet before the Dragon Blooded caught word of it. Emerald Wind brushed him off, and soon discovered the wisdom behind Compassionate Plough’s warning.

When the Dragon Blooded authorities heard what Emerald Wind was teaching, they came down on him hard. He was arrested, but this time they weren’t amused by his actions they way they were whenever he was arrested as a teenager for breaking into libraries.

They started hauling him off toward the prison. Along the way, he was promised that his reeducation would begin as soon as the monks arrived. Emerald Wind realized that meant he would be brainwashed. He told them flat out, “I’m not afraid of the truth. What are you afraid of?”

They began to beat him. It was at that point that he Exalted. Suddenly he had the power to fight back. And fight back he did, to the best of his ability, but he was somehow knocked unconscious. When he awakened, he was nowhere near Cherak.
