== Shadowy Mistress of Flames  ==

'''Kanti:''' Kanti sits before the flames on a silk cushion in a perfect lotus position, facing south, towards the pole of her element. Her dark eyes are open, though the horror they contained last night has faded somewhat in the meditative calm she has placed herself in. The robe of her screams is wrapped around her, hugging close to her figure.

The room she has found is not a large one, spread about with silk cushions, and a large fire on one wall, intended for people to listen to stories on a cold winter night, warmed by the comforting glow. The sounds from the rest of the manse are muted, the clangs from the forge barely registering on the occupants ears, freeing them to concentrate on the tales being spun.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' ''It will begin soon. '' Is the thought that wafts about in her head, not giving her a moment's rest. ''And who knows what will happen. ''

She had not been in battles before, not really, the Dark Angel reflects as she makes her way down the corridors. People hired her to kill, not to command. Though she had been at the periphery of battles before...going for the generals and command staff.

''Perhaps I should have done that here. ''

Except the Parishioner knew her reputation. He knew what she had done to the Puppeteer, and she was younger then. The deathknight would be on his guard now, against any such sortie against him. The net would be too fine, she reflects, looking for her Terrestrial.

''Her'' Terrestrial? Absently reaching inside herself, expelling the dregs of her association with the Malfeans with a momentary steeling of will, Selina's mouth turns to a lop-sided smirk. She doesn't pay more attention to the purging than she has to, shaping it into something that will not be overly disruptive, having done so many times.

''I am not going to let her go now, am I? ''

Not back to Charmaine, and who else wants her? The girl is beginning to grow on her, at any rate. Quite a contrast to what Selina felt when she captured her. Yes.

''Now where did she go? ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' The skies above begin to rumble, and Selina hears a faint crack of lightning as she finds a door, pausing as she rests her hand on it. Kanti was in there, yes. She opens the door, stepping in, closing it behind her. Looking much less monstrous than before.

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti remains in the lotus position for a time, apparently having missed Selina's entry into the quiet room. After a few minutes however, she seems to tense as she notices someone is in the room, turning her head to look at Selina, tensing all the more, then forcing herself to relax, unfolding herself from the lotus position and turning to kneel politely.

''What does she want from me? ''

"Good morning, my lady." She says warmly

'''Selina de Windia: ''' Selina looks at her, wondering if she spent her night in that state of warm bliss, or whether she slept. The Windian didn't know first-hand of how long such magics affected people, after all.

"Slept well, Kanti?" Her voice is soft, idle. Not a hint of malevolence.

'''Kanti: ''' "I do not sleep, my lady." She says quietly, almost apologetically, "Though my night was peaceful."

"If I may ask, how was your night my lady?"

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Oh? No sleep before battle?" Selina shakes her head slightly, then raises her eyebrows at the Terrestrial. "Well, I will assume you are rested."

As for the question...Selina pauses for a moment, then smiles slightly. "It was...interesting. And restful."

'''Kanti: ''' "No my lady, I do not sleep." she says softly, a little more pain edging into her eyes. "Though I am well rested, yes."

''I see too many things when I sleep, mistress, to ever want to sleep again. ''

"But I am happy that you have had a restful and interesting night." she says with a pleased smile.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Hmm." Selina gauges her words, thinking of why she would not. The obvious answer comes up. "Sleep entails your former mistress' attention, I suppose."

''Not that it is a hard guess to make. She probably knows all about what happened that day by now. ''

'''Kanti: ''' A look of some pain passes over Kanti's features at Selina's words.

''Her attentions would not be unwelcome, my lady. ''

''I crave Her touch, Her voice, as I told Iron Tears. ''

''I only fear the price She will extract from me. ''

''That is not why I do not sleep, though. ''

''When I sleep I see Him.<br>When I sleep I see Heaven.<br>When I sleep I see the scars being drawn on my flesh.<br>When I sleep I see Sarah.<br>When I sleep I see Her. ''

''I want to see Her! ''

Kanti looks up at her, eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and need, hidden once again. "In manner of speaking, my lady." she says very quietly.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "She will not trouble you much longer." The Windian says simply, looking about for someplace to sit in the room. She finds an appropriately opulant silk cushion, and lowers herself onto it, wings spreading out in relaxation behind her. "Nor will the others. Their time is approaching."

Or ours.

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti nods to that, keeping her face free of the sadness that thought brings. "Thank you, my lady." is all she says, watching Selina spread herself out on the cushion.

''Sometimes I want to kill Her. ''<br>

''Sometimes I wish She wouldn't let me think such things. ''

''I want to see Her! ''

"Is there anything I can do for you, my lady?"

'''Selina de Windia: ''' Selina looks up at her, thinking for a moment, then speaks. "Anything? Hmm, perhaps come and brush my hair." She points idly toward the long, long cascade of pale blonde hair flowing down her back, around the wing roots, and onto the cushion and floor behind her. "Should you have a brush anyway. It has been awhile since someone did that, and I've only been able to care for it occasionally lately."

'''Kanti: ''' "I have no brush to hand, my lady." she says with a hint of apology for her voice, for having failed, even in so small a way "I can go and get one, of course. It will not take long. If I may?" she gestures to the door.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Mmm, yes." Selina says quietly. "Go get one then, I will wait."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti nods and flows to her feet in a graceful movement, then pads quietly from the room, going to the quarters she shares with Fiona, searching in her bags for the brush, pulling out the soft pearlesant brush, a stylised symbol of venus picked out in a hundred tiny sapphires on the back.

She hurries back to the room, knockingonce before entering.

"I'm sorry I took so long, my lady." she says softly as she kneels behind Selina, gathering some of her hair and slowly pulling the brush through it.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' Selina relaxes a bit more, feeling the brushing. Far too long since Lorna had done it for her, or anyone else. And wonders, perhaps, if Kanti enjoys doing this.

"You didn't take too long." The Windian replies, leaning back on one hand slightly. "Really, I'm not that demanding."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti sighs softly as she runs the brush though the pale pale hair, drawing the strangs, straightening them. She smiles to herself as she does, carefully working.

"Your hair is wonderful, my lady." she notes, warmth and a measure of contentment in her voice.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Thank you." She replies warmly, wings drooping to either side as she exhales lightly. It has been too long since she's let someone do that -- the Pale Angel probably would have better things to do. "It took a long time to grow it this long, and I'm always afraid of losing it. But, I am told it adds grace and beauty to my appearance."

'''Kanti: ''' "It does, my lady. Though your grace and beauty is not just in your hair" She agrees as she brushes, with the merest hint of envy in her tone. "It would be a terrible shame if you lost it." she says with a nod.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "There are ways to grow it back quicker...but I'd prefer not to use them." Selina states, wondering for a moment how much time the Pale Angel spends on herself.

''Probably alot, given how her image goes. ''

Her voice turns a bit amusedly interested. "Not just in my hair, hmm?"

'''Kanti: ''' "Of course, my lady." she says with a nod. She isn't entirely sure she would like such things used on her hair either, as she drawns the brush through the blonde hair.

She shakes her head "Your beauty is in more than just your hair, my lady, if I may be so bold as to say so." she says hesitantly "Especially when the jewel on your neck shines and your skin glows." her voice quickening somewhat, her breath hotter.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' Raising an eyebrow at that and looking at Kanti quizzically, Selina chuckles softly. "Oh, that is cheating. In a way at least." She looks back ahead once more. "Besides, that also induces lust. There is beauty for beauty's sake, after all."

She pauses for a few moments, then continues as Kanti brushes her hair. "Tell me, did you see Windia?"

'''Kanti: ''' "I know it does, my lady." She says, still a little breathy, thinking back to yesterday morning, and to the night before that. To the vision of lust she saw. Such a vision.

"You have beauty and grace without such ... cheating." she pauses as she stops the heat rising, concentrating on the hair, smoothly, carefully, working it straighter.

"I visited there once, my lady, many years ago."

'''Selina de Windia: ''' Selina is quiet for a bit, letting her mind empty as Kanti's brush runs through her tresses. But she comes out of it before long.

''I visited there a few weeks ago. ''

''It has been longer since I have lived there. ''

"How long ago?" Selina wonders aloud. "What did you think of it?"

'''Kanti: ''' "Some twelve years ago, my lady." she says softly, concentrating on the hair for a time "It was a pleasant place to visit my lady, though I did not see much of it. Seeing the windians flying as the sunset hit their wings was such a sight..." she trails off happily, busying herself with the hair once more

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Ah." Selina replies absently, thinking on the date.

''What was I doing twelve years ago? ''

Something unpleasant, to be sure. Those early years became a blur sometimes.

"Two years after I was gone. It would probably have been peaceful then."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti nods "It was peaceful, my lady." Kanti takes a brief moment to survey her handiwork, then starts on new strands.

"Why did you leave, my lady?" she asks innocently.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Why?" Selina echos quietly, then adopts a firmer tone of voice, though not louder. "Because I literally killed my childhood and couldn't remain there. I'm still not sure if it was incredibly brave or incredibly craven. But I would have died with it had I stayed, and I'd already lost enough."

'''Kanti: ''' "I ... am not sure what to say to that, my lady." she says very quietly, sympathetic pain in her voice. "Except that I am sorry for your loss." She falls silent for a time then, concentrating only on the hair, and the relaxing motions she makes with her hands.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Someday I'll go back." The Windian says idly, a finger wrapping one of her bangs around itself. "Not to a dead or dark kingdom. Not to one a deathlord gives me like some favored dog. I haven't survived this long to see even that tainted."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti just nods to this, the ghost of a scowl passing over her face as Selina touches her hair before Kanti is finished with it, though no comment is passed and she works on with the merest pause.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Because the rest certainly is tainted." Selina finishes, then waits for a few moments before looking back to Kanti. "Tell me Kanti, is my tainted self so attractive? Or is it merely the appearance? I am a beautiful ''monster'', am I not?"

'''Kanti: ''' ''Beautiful monster ... so appropriate ...<br>Something to desire and abhor, in one person. ''

''Just like Her.<br>Why does She make me desire that which I loathe? ''

"You..." she starts off very softly "...are a beautiful monster, yes my lady." she closes her eyes "Your taint, it ..." she trails off, not sure how to continue.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' For a moment, Selina almost tells her there is a part that is not tainted, not dirtied by the world and her experiences, but she doesn't. Not yet anyway. It would not do for Charmaine to find that out, and Kanti would tell her under duress.

''Charmaine has no business prying in there. ''

"You hate it, I know." The Windian's voice is level. "And I suppose you desire it as well. Not the first time such a thing has happened with my kind, I would say. Some find me...quite disgusting, yet alluring at the same time."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti nods, her face looking guilty, confused, pained.

"Yes, my lady. I hate it and desire it." she breathes out, merely a whisper.

''And I hate that I desire it. ''<br>

''And sometimes I wish I didn't. ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Well, should you desire it, you can have it. Conditions permitting." Selina says with a smoothly self-ironic tone. "A pity you never saw me when I was in the white as opposed to the black, though I think that the black gave me something ''else''. To knowingly sell yourself for power, not like a fool who blindly accepts and does not ask the conditions, that matures people."

'''Kanti: ''' ''I am yours and yet you give me that choice? ''

"I ... thank you, my lady." she says quietly, thinking over the rest of what the dark angel said.

''To sell yourself for power?<br>I have been sold for power, and have offered myself for power.<br>Never for my own power though, which is what she did.<br>I wonder what it is like?<br>I wonder if the price is ever worth it in the end? ''

"I am sure it does, my lady." she says as she finishes the last strands of pale gold.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "It did to me." Selina says flatly. "I had been born with a lesser version of your power. Then I was chosen by the sun. But my darkness...I got that on my own." She stops for a awhile, remembering that day, the day she decided to act on the little dreams she'd been receiving. "The day I decided to make my own choice."

"I would not have you come to me only through fear, Kanti. People should have a choice."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti just nods to the first part of her statement, no idea of what to say beyond agreement. Who was she to critizes the Dark Angel? She was sure it made sense at time, to give up the warmth that Fiona could give.

''A choice?<br>You gave me a choice before, and I chose to be yours.<br>Do you wish me to choose again and again? ''

"I do not come to you only through fear, my lady, I would come because you ask."

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "So you say." And she did not wholly believe it. More and more, however, it was becoming apparent that Kanti ''preferred'' this...life? Small wonder the Vestal had mistreated her, doubtless once her thrill ran out.

"Well, I do not ask right now. But you seem to want to come to me. I detected a note of desire a few moments ago."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti sets the pearlesant hairbrush down.

''...a note of desire? ''

"I am sorry, my lady. It ... it is hard sometimes, ... you ..." she takes a breath to calm herself.

''I can't think straight around you. ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "I see." Selina demures with some amusement, looking away, back to her front. She wonders how many others in the little group she's met over the past few weeks think that of her.

''Does the Pale Angel, I wonder? ''

It would be interesting to find out if it was her or...something else, that did.

"Hmph. Sorry? Nothing to apologize for."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti bows her head, and picks the hairbrush up, moving round to kneel on the cushions before Selina, now the hair is all brushed out. She sets the brush down, letting out a little contented sigh.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "What did you do before the Vestal?" Selina asks, turquoise eyes radiating curiosity. She has wondered this for a few days now, in idle moments. Surely the girl cannot have been in the service of the deathknight for all those years.

"And what do you want to do after this war is over?"

'''Kanti: ''' ''before Her ... ''

''there was Heaven ... ''

''before Her ... ''

''I did not hurt. ''

''before Her ... ''

"For much of my life I served one of the Starchosen, my lady." she says simply "I was His companion as He travelled the world, until He ... He ..."

Kanti's face takes on a pained expression, remembered agony, remembered betrayal "...He gave me to Her." she whispers.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' ''So, that is what happened. ''

Selina remains silent for a few moments, looking over the Terrestrial. The signs were there, those soulsteel drops, the scars. Charmaine hadn't bothered to remake her, no, she'd merely overwritten some of what was there before.

"Two masters who did you wrong." Selina shakes her head. "Well, I will see to making sure such things do not happen in the future."

'''Kanti: ''' ''He did me wrong ... ? She did me wrong? ''

''He gave me to Her ... ''

''Where would I be without Her? ''

"Thank you, my lady." She says, gratitude lacing her quiet voice.

''does this mean I'm trapped with you then? ''

''I don't know if I can take that ...but...I said I would...so I must! ''

"After the war, I would stay with you and Moon, my lady, unless you gave me to someone else." A strange mixture of hope and fear colouring her voice at that.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Want to leave me for someone less...terrifying, I suppose?" Selina asks, looking past the Dragoness for a moment, before focusing back on her. "Or are you afraid to leave me? Think you might end up with someone worse?"

'''Kanti: ''' "I..."

Kanti looks at Selina nervously, not wanting to lie to her but not sure how she will take the answer.

"Yes, my lady." <br>

''I fear both staying and leaving. ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Tell me then, how would you enjoy working under someone in Windia?" Selina starts, then pauses for a moment, suddenly realizing something. "Perhaps...another 'starchild'? Do you know of any in Windia, perchance?"

"Also, come over here, sit in front of me, I think I will brush your hair."

'''Kanti: ''' "I...thank you my lady!" she says gratefully, pleased of the attention that will soon be lavished on her.

Kanti picks herself up and moves over to be in front of the dark angel, seating herself gracefully, offering the hairbrush backwards.

"I ... do not recall any, no my lady. I would work under anyone you placed me, of course."

''what would you have me do though? ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' ''None at all? ''

''Well, perhaps I will find out later. ''

The Windian takes the brush, a length of Kanti's long dark hair, and begins to brush it. Soon, she is doing it automatically, thinking of what to say. "I am not sure. You could also go to Whiteshield if we manage to reclaim it."

Of course, given the direction the war was taking, it was either reclaim Whiteshield, or lose Windia.

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti lets out warm, content noises as her hair is brushed, luxuriating in the attention more than anything else. She is silent for a time aside from these small noises before she answers.

"Of course my lady, I will go where you bid me."

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Hm. I am not sure of that, yet." ''Perhaps some noble family I know I can trust. ''

"At any rate, Kanti, I think you should wear something under that...robe." Selina continues brushing her hair, careful to touch the robe as little as possible. "That is not quite decent attire to wear alone."

'''Kanti: ''' "I will wait for your descision then, my lady." she says softly as she kneels there.

''Something under my robe? ''

"As you wish. I will find something to wear beneath it as soon as I can, my lady"<br>

''thank you for letting me wear it still''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' ''In the meantime... ''

"What kind of person would you want to serve, anyway?" Selina asks as she brushes out a slight tangle, pausing to take hair out of the brush.

'''Kanti: ''' ''what kind of a person would I like to serve? ''

''what kind of a person '''would''' I like to serve? ''

Kanti is silent for quite sometime as she thinks about this. The question is quite difficult for her to actually comprehend. It wasn't something she ever expected to get to choose.

"I ... do not know, my lady." she eventually offers hesitantly.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Really?" Selina asks, not sure on whether she should suggest the kinds of people who would be 'best' for Kanti or not. "I assume not a cruel person. What about a person who is not interested in using you sexually?"

''The last thing I would need to see in Windia or Whiteshield would be her as someone's bondage pretty. ''

'''Kanti: ''' "It...is hard, my lady."

''I do not know what I want. How can I? ''

"I would prefer that they were not cruel though, my lady, yes." she says as she considers the question "I could survive a chaste existence, if that was who you gave me too."

'''Selina de Windia: ''' She pauses in the brushing, eyebrow raising a bit. "So you would prefer not to be chaste then." It's more of a statement, flatly said, as the Windian resumes brushing Kanti's hair. "Oh, I have an idea then. We will see how things turn out first."

'''Kanti: ''' "I would prefer not to be caste, my lady." she says in unnessesary agreement as the hair brushing starts again, calming a little now the repetative motion has started once again.

"Of course my lady, I wait for who you choose."

''I wonder who she will choose? ''<Br>

''will she really give me away? ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' So, that was how it was then. She wonders something ''else'' now, something a bit silly. "You enjoy your master or mistress' attentions, I take it."

Not missing a beat with her brush, Selina follows up as smoothly as before. "Would this include mine? Minus the...darkness, or whatever it is that you are afraid of."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti makes more of the soft content sounds as her hair is brushed, she nods her head slightly, before she holds it still again "Yes my lady, having attention lavished on me by a master or mistress is always appreciated." she says warmly.

She turns her head slightly, so she can see Selina "Of course! Your attentions are wonderful my lady, even the darkness ..." she trails off "...but sometimes there is too much darkness." she speaks quietly "Sorry."

'''Selina de Windia: ''' ''As I thought. ''

Selina always had problems dealing with people like that, unless she was in a specifically predatory mood. They like her attentions, and then wait for her to begin them.

''How do I deal with that? ''

Especially when they're like...Kanti. It really felt odd then. But...

"Less darkness now, I assure you." Selina states idly, brushing the girl's hair as she keeps her thoughts to herself. "I myself prefer not to have it looming like that."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti lets out a small pleased sigh as Selina informs her of the darkness, unaware of the confusion she is causing in the dark angel behind her.

"mmmm..."

'''Selina de Windia: ''' ''Hmph. ''

She continues brushing the Dragon-Blooded's hair, fuming for a moment.

''Hmph! ''

The girl's hair is fairly well-combed by now -- she probably gets to work on it more often than Selina does with her own, and it is easier to maintain. "Everyone likes a bit of darkness, deep down. A bit, at least. It's...sinful. Secret." Her tone is still as neutral as before, though the brushing is winding down as it nears finishing.

'''Kanti: ''' ''like the darkness? ''

''I love the darkness, my lady''

''and hate it! ''

"I know." she whispers softly "I know about how people like the darkness."<br>

''I know how I like the darkness. ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' Selina puts the brush down after one last stroke. On a close cushion, gently, feeling the predator in her sharpen, awaken, focus. As if a great beast is roused from sleep, peering over the divider between its lair into the world, and hungry. She feels herself grow taller, infinitely more daunting, towering over the Terrestrial who cannot behold this as she pulls her back, drawing her into a slight embrace. The robe screams into her mind, and the predator looms higher, the mind's smile becomes more razored.

And she pushes it back. Hugs the girl to her, accepting the screams silently, letting them reverberate through her mind.

''I screamed too, once. ''

''And more after, sometimes. ''

A hand wanders down the robe, fingers dipping underneath it, and further. She leashes that Presence in her mind, muffles it. "And so do I, Kanti. But I restrain mine. Best done softly, best shown lightly. Shadow is the backdrop. Tell me, how does Charmaine do it?"

''As she did so with me? Or differently? ''

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti stiffens just momentarily in surprise as the arms slip around her from behind, then she relaxes into the embrace as she is pulled back against the dark angel, feeling the warmth up her spine. She makes no resistance to the probings of Selina's fingers merely soft, pleased noises.

"The Vestal does it in so many different ways my lady." she says softly "Sometimes I barely noticed the darkness, sometimes it was a smothering cloak over me, sometimes pain, sometimes pleasure." <Br>

''I begged for them all. ''

Her tone heats somewhat as memories start to come back to her, remembering all the many things that happened, far too many of them all too pleasurable.

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "I see." Selina says softly, probing deeper, keeping the sin out of her voice. It remains soft, quiet. The predator is held at bay.

''Wait. ''

''That time comes. ''

''When we will tear out the hearts of those who oppose us. ''

''For now, sleep. ''

''We will awaken soon. ''

She nuzzles Kanti softly, drawing her tightly against her with her free arm. "Ah ah, no pain here, Kanti. No pain. Pain is for the battle. It comes soon. You will survive it. We will survive it."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti lets out more noises as Selina probes deeper, pressing back against her as she holds her and nuzzles, the tenderness seeming so strange coming from the dark angel, though not unwelcome. Certainly not unwelcome.

"Sometimes I want pain." she barely whispers, guilt in her voice.

''I will survive the battle? ''

''I have to! ''

''I have to see Her again. ''

'''Selina de Windia: ''' "Sometimes I do as well." Selina says with a bit more of a hardness to her voice than before, breathing against her hair. "A pity."

'''Kanti: ''' Kanti shivers at the hardness in Selina's voice, a delighted shiver.

She lets the Dark Angel's probing fingers and lips take her where they will, pleasured noises filling the air.
