Backstory: The Marukani horse ran hard; the woman riding on its back was bent low, and pushing her mount hard. Behind them through the dust of their wake were the shouts and cries of the Bandits behind her. There were only three left, but they were highly agitated. Leda was pleased that those fire dust grenades she had acquired in paragon had proved to be worth the jade. She'd only been able to purchase two with the expense money, and now she was out.
As a realm courier she was used to assignments like these. Take this doohickey and see that it gets to this particular dragonblood, and you will be paid handsomely in jade. Always in jade. She had considered more than once running a missive or package for the guild just so she wouldn't have to pay the damnable exchange fees to buy things with silver. This wasn't the realm, but you wouldn't know it by the Dynasts. She suspected it helped when you could incinerate anyone who argued too vociferously.
The bandits had picked up her trail just a short time ago, but she was running out of speed. So, she reached ahead of her and pulled out the firewand she kept strapped to the saddle. It was charged and ready, when she reined up her horse and dropped it to its side. Crouched behind it she waited for the bandits to emerge from the dust cloud the dry savannahs of the southeast were known for.
She didn't wait long, and as they came she saw their leader was Wyldtouched.
"Damn” she whispered. And sighted the firewand on him. They came without fear, and when she was sure they were within range she let loose with the flame. The blaze leapt forward from the muzzle of the device and played out over the body of the leader. With a great whoosh, it roared over him and he fell blackened and screaming to the ground. She didn't wait though, dropping the firewand and drawing her knives.
One of the two other riders cast a javelin while she swapped weapons, and she cried out as it bit into her leg. Her horse also screamed as the second javelin pierced its belly.
The bandits dismounted and drew their short dirty chopping swords, but Leda didn't wait. The javelin hadn't stuck in her, and she rolled forward as the bandit leapt down, springing up into an attack, her own blood spraying out from the gash in her thigh. The bandit’s sword blocked her first knife, but the second sneaked through and lodged itself into the bandit's throat. The dark man fell, and she spun on her heel to face the last bandit. This one came more slowly, waving his blade before him. Even though she was wounded, the fight didn't last long, and in a moment she stood over the corpse of another adversary.
That was when the hand clamped over her throat and lifted her from the ground. The leader had survived. Though charred and scarred, it was huge and now it had her in its grasp. She couldn't breath and felt herself passing out even as the Wyldtouched began to laugh.
With her last remaining awareness, she reached up, not to wrestle with the arm holding her, but to drive her knife into the eye socket of the leader. A gurgling scream informed her bleary mind that she had succeeded. Tough, but dumb. She lay there for a time, considering her own death and how soon it must now arrive. And yet when she felt her body again around her she attempted to get up and begin moving on.
It was then that she saw him. The glowing silver being was laughing at her, "Shouldn't you be busy dying now?"
She spat and continued moving towards her horse. It was clearly a god of some sort, and there was little she could do about it, so she just kept moving.
Luna smiled again and bent down to kiss his newest chosen...
