The Law

Written by Varian Ironcrow, translated into Riverspeak from High Realm by Verdence.

The following crimes are Capital Offenses, to be punished within one week of capture by hanging, or summary execution by a Judge if captured in the act.

Murder: The willful and premeditated and unprovoked killing of another human being, whether through direct action, by proxy, or by willful and malicious omission of aid.

Rape: The violent, forcible, or coercive commission of sex acts upon an unwilling partner.

Treason Against Humanity: Conspiring with, aiding, or serving hostile spirits such as demons, the dead, gods, or the twisted fair folk against one’s community and neighbors.

The following crimes are Severe Offenses, to be punished by ten years hard labor.

Manslaughter: The willful or negligent killing of another human being through direct action or through cowardly omission of aid.

Treason: Conspiring with, aiding, or serving hostile governments.

Malicious Theft: Robbery, burglary, or embezzlement of sufficient funds to severely impair the life and livelihood of the victim.

The following crimes are Serious Offenses, to be punished by five years hard labor.

Attempted Murder: Actions taken with intent but failure to kill another human being including bodily assault, willful abandonment to die, or by proxy, not interrupted by Law enforcement. If interrupted by Law enforcement, punishable as murder.

Attempted Rape: Any failed attempt to engage in sex acts with an unwilling partner not interrupted by Law enforcement. If interrupted by Law enforcement, punishable as rape.

The following crimes are Common Offenses, to be punished by one year hard labor.

Malicious Assault: Unprovoked bodily or spiritual harm inflicted upon another human being resulting in excessive injury, maiming, or mutilation.

Petty Theft: Robbery, burglary, or embezzlement of funds that do not significantly impact the life and livelihood of the victim.

The following crimes are Corporal Offenses, to be publicly punished by a flogging of five to fifteen blows with a reed cane, or by summary beating at the hands of the convicting Judge.

Battery: The unprovoked beating of another human being not resulting in permanent injury.

Sedition: Willful incitement of riot and lawlessness.

Corruption: Accepting a bribe in the capacity of Law enforcement. Officers found to have accepted a bribe are also summarily stripped of all rank and will be bodily thrown out of town.

The following crimes are Civil Offenses, to be punished by one day public humiliation in the stocks.

Slander: Spoken or written lies of a malicious nature intended to damage the reputation or livelihood of another human being, business, Law enforcement, or the government.

Usury: Charging excessive interest rates, price gouging on necessities such as bread or medicine, or otherwise extorting unfair amounts of money for goods or services based solely upon dire need. Confiscation of the necessities may, at the Judge’s discretion, also be imposed.

Enticement: Attempting to bribe an officer of the Law.
