Background

You hail from the lands of the southeast, where you learnt the arts of medicine from your mother, a healer said to be favoured by the spirits, and the arts of self-defense from your father, a warrior with a mysterious past. Your land was wracked by conflict, and when war broke out, your parents sent you away to keep you safe.

One day, you experienced a premonition of great suffering befalling your village. You hastened back to find it razed to the ground, its inhabitants slaughtered. You found your mother butchered, but your father was still barely alive — but mortally wounded. You frantically tried to save him, but it was in vain. It was only after he died that you realised that you had used techniques you had never been taught. You also saw, through your tears, the aura of exaltation surrounding you like a burning nimbus, invisible to all save yourself.

Five years after the destruction of your village, you have taken up the sword of your father, and the skills of your mother. You have vowed not to let the knowledge passed on to you disappear, and have made a name for yourself as a healer and teacher of martial arts. Having seen your father die in your arms, you will not have another person die while in your care. You have also sworn to find those who killed your parents, and make them pay; although with the passing of the years, you are beginning to doubt if you will ever succeed in this.

You have found no other practitioners of your style of martial arts, which puzzles you. The closest reference you can find is to a supposedly mythical style dating from the First Age, some 15 centuries ago. Your father surely could not have learnt it from such ancient sources… could he?
