Why

There are too many closet Nobilis junkies here for this not to happen. I just went farther than everyone else and decided to convert the whole system, instead of saying, "these privileged beings use the Nobilis diceless system because I like them better."

How

ExaltedNobilis/NotePad

Willows' System

This conversion owes more to Nobilis than it does to Exalted. There. I said it. I like the Nobilis system better.

I will be doing two versions of this, one for "Heroic Exalted" and one for "Wuxia Exalted".

I've polished this set of notes into my own skimpy-but-finished system, Exaltis -- Mapache

Heroic

Characters have four stats: Essence, Mien, Caste, and Anima. Besides Anima, each starts with 5SP; you can buy more at cc.

Essence:

  • Provides Auctoritas.
  • Essence SP can be converted to other types of SP. (See chart.)
  • Essence has one Descriptor per rank; these name strong emotional ties the character has. You cannot choose the same Essence Descriptor twice.
  • ESP can always be spent on Penetration, regardless of the type of Stunt, as long as the Stunt is relevant to a Descriptor.
  • Essence Stunts can raise Auctoritas.
  • Spending ESP causes anima flare even if it is for a Mien Stunt.
  • Essence is the stereotypical stat of Solars; high Essence makes them very versatile without having to invest deeply in their other abilities.
  • Some Essence Descriptors could be:
    • Protects the helpless
    • Reborn King seeks to reclaim his kingdom
    • Doesn't want the Wyld Hunt to kill him again

Mien:

  • Analogous to Aspect.
  • Mien Stunts can affect many mortals, or allow the Exalt to perform an unusual task.
  • Mien SP can never be spent on Penetration.
  • High Mien is the stereotypical stat of the Dragon-Blooded; it allows them to interact with mortals gracefully, without resorting to the blunt instruments of other abilities or manifesting the Anathematic flare.

Caste:

  • Analogous to Aspect.
  • Each Exalt type has a choice of different Castes; they have functionality as Aspect in particular areas.
  • Caste Stunts cause anima flare.
  • Caste SP can be spent on Penetration normally.
  • Caste is the stereotypical stat of Sidereals, who are expected to serve very particular Caste-divided duties; it gives them the freedom to express themselves with Anima.

Anima:

  • Each Exalted chooses his Anima, which is an expression of himself. Anima is defined first by a character's name, then by other aspects of his ability he wants to express. Each of these is a Descriptor. Anima has one Descriptor per rank, plus one per every two ranks of Essence. This further underlines the extended capability of high-Essence Exalted. You can choose the same Anima Descriptor twice.
  • There are no Anima Stunts. Instead, whenever an Anima Descriptor applies to a Stunt, it reduces the Stunt's level by one. Multiple descriptors may reduce the level of a Stunt simultaneously. The level of a Stunt can never go below 0.
  • Anima is the stereotypical stat of Lunars, who are talented generalists, but also are known to specialize more narrowly than any other Exalted.
  • Some anima categories include:
    • Names
      • Diamond River Scholar
      • Triumphant Star
      • Waterfall Sundering Master
    • Talents
      • Opal Lion Style Martial Arts
      • Wilting Lily School Archery
      • Sorcery

Wuxia

Anima does not encompass Martial Arts; there is a fifth stat, Kung Fu, which is identical to Anima but encompasses mastery of Martial Arts. In this system, the corrupted Solar types have Caste as their stereotypical ability, and Sidereals have Kung Fu.

Stunt Charts

Easy Stunt (stat rank or lower): 0 SP
Normal Stunt (+1 rank): 1 SP
Hard Stunt: (+2 ranks): 2 SP
Deep Stunt: (+4 ranks): 4 SP
Profound Stunt: (+8 ranks): 8 SP and a Deadly wound

Mien Stunts:
All Mien Stunts are "here, now, and at him." This means they are local, immediate, and have a single target. Abyssal Mien Stunts are as hurtful as the next higher rank, for free. Lunar Mien Stunts are never limited by human capability; they will always have an appropriate animal form for the task.
0: Normal Mortal (cook a decent meal)
1: Expert Mortal (cook a gourmet meal)
2: Peak Mortal (catch arrows)
3: Improbable Feats (break a wall with a punch)
4: Astounding Feats (Run through a crowd unhindered, lift a siaka)
5: Impossible (Throw arrows, run on smoke)
6: Awesome (Slice off names, leap between elemental poles)
7: Anything concievable (wrestle the Kukla... for a while)

Stunt Modifiers (Essence, Caste, Anima, Kungfu):
As Mien, but each is available at one level lower, and only within the ability's bailiwick. Also:
+1 Stunt Level: Reflexive: You may take an additional Stunt action this turn. Celestials may use this ability only once a turn. For Dragon-Blooded, each subsequent use of this ability in a turn costs +1 SL.
+2 Stunt Levels: Doublethink: This Stunt uses its descriptor in a poetic way to affect something usually outside its field of influence. (+1 for Sidereals.)
+2 Stunt Levels: Extra Actions: This Stunt affects an appropriate number of targets nearby, including several Exalts or unlimited mortals.
+3 Stunt Levels: Independent Actions: You have (Essence rank) Stunts of the appropriate Level this turn. They do not all have to be the same. (+2 SL for Infernals.)
+3 Stunt Levels: Persistent: You can keep doing this Stunt anytime the condition that triggers it (something like, "someone attacks me" or "I try and convince someone") obtains. (Once per occurrence.) (+2 SL for Solars.)

ESP Conversion:
An amount of ESP can be spent to create other types of SP; the conversion rate depends on your Essence rank. In meditation, you can convert at this rate:
Essence Rank / ESP needed to create one other SP:
0-1 ::: 4
2-3 ::: 3
4-5 ::: 2
If you are performing a Stunt relevant to one of your Essence descriptors, you can instantly convert ESP for that Stunt at a 1-point discount. This means that, if you have Essence 3 and you need one more CSP to save the king you serve, and you have an Essence Descriptor like Protect the King, you can spend 2 ESP in the place of one CSP for that Stunt.

The Anima Banner

This activates when you use non-Mien Stunts, depending on the difficulty of the Stunt. It fades at one level per scene, as usual; subsequent Stunts that do not raise the anima level don't have any effect on it.

Easy: Glittering castemark
Normal: Glow
Hard: Bright glow
Deep: Bonfire
Profound: Iconic

Caste-based System

There are only two kinds of stats: Essence and Caste, but each Exalt has a Caste stat for each Caste of their type, so a Solar has 6 main stats: Essence, Dawn, Zenith, Twilight, Night, and Eclipse, while a Dragonblood has Essence, Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Wood. Now, these Castes vary from almost pure Aspect for Solars, through relatively even Domain/Aspect for Dragonblooded, to Domain with just the tad of Aspect (and a hint of Realm) for Sidereals. (I don’t know what to do about lunars and alkies though)-HeWhoSpeaksOfDarkness

Here's a start at the Stunt charts for the Castes- PS- these could be a little off because I don’t have Nobilis
