Occult Charms

On Summoning Demons

Infernal Exalted use versions of demon-summoning spells, but under different circumstances – rather than ripping their souls from Malfeas and striking at their core with hooks and chains of the soul, Infernals release them from their prison and entreaty them with words, will and gifts of Essence. This is mechanically identical to the normal spells, although should the Exalt fail in her attempt the demon is unlikely to devour her carelessly – it just isn’t inclined toward any kind of servitude.

Terrestrial Circle Sorcery

  • Cost: 1 Willpower
  • Duration: Instant
  • Type: Simple
  • Minimum Occult: 3
  • Minimum Essence: 3
  • Prerequisite Charms: None

The Demon Princes first spread the knowledge of sorcery to the Exalted, and they are quite willing to teach their own creations its secrets. Terrestrial Circle Sorcery acts as a suitably tantalising initiation into the secrets of Creation.

Broken Wing Sutra

  • Cost: None
  • Duration: Permanent
  • Type: Special
  • Minimum Occult: 4
  • Minimum Essence: 3
  • Prerequisite Charms: Terrestrial Circle Sorcery

As masters of occult knowledge, the Yozis disclose secrets best left unknown all too readily to their servants. The first of these relates to the breaking down of boundaries between worlds and the songs required to bring the Yozi-kin into Creation. Exalts knowing this Sutra can cast Demon of the Third Circle as though it were Celestial Circle Sorcery for the purposes of casting time, Demon of the Second Circle as though it were Terrestrial Circle Sorcery, and Demon of the First Circle as though it were a normal Simple Charm and not sorcery at all.

Celestial Circle Sorcery

  • Cost: 2 Willpower
  • Duration: Instant
  • Type: Simple
  • Minimum Occult: 4
  • Minimum Essence: 4
  • Prerequisite Charms: Terrestrial Circle Sorcery

As the Infernals vault their arcane power, greater secrets are disclosed to them, to satiate their desires for knowledge and might. Celestial Circle Sorcery is taught to all scions of the Demon Princes that show sufficient talent and determination.

Fractured Mirror Sutra

  • Cost: None
  • Duration: Permanent
  • Type: Special
  • Minimum Occult: 5
  • Minimum Essence: 4
  • Prerequisite Charms: Celestial Circle Sorcery, Broken Wing Sutra

As an Infernal’s sorcerous ability rises further the second Sutra is revealed to them, of the nature of Essence and how Creation is easiest warped to their will. An Exalt knowing this Charm has all of their spells reduced in casting time in the same manner as the Broken Wing Sutra, not just their demon-summoning spells.

Solar Circle Sorcery

  • Cost: 3 Willpower
  • Duration: Instant
  • Type: Simple
  • Minimum Occult: 5
  • Minimum Essence: 5
  • Prerequisite Charms: Celestial Circle Sorcery

To those Infernals approaching the peak of their potential the Solar Circle is taught, that they might better wreak havoc on the world around them and on themselves. Like the previous Circles, Solar Circle Sorcery is readily available to any Infernal proving her worth to her masters.

Shattered Soul Sutra

  • Cost: None
  • Duration: Permanent
  • Type: Special
  • Minimum Occult: 6
  • Minimum Essence: 5
  • Prerequisite Charms: Solar Circle Sorcery, Fractured Mirror Sutra

Taught only to the mighty few capable of grasping its unimaginable depths, the Shattered Soul Sutra is the pinnacle of mastery over sorcerous law. An Infernal knowing this Charm breaks her spiritual being in an emulation of the Princes themselves; she may Combo sorcery, and split her dice pool when casting it.

Horrors Best Unseen

  • Cost: 3 motes
  • Duration: One scene
  • Type: Simple
  • Minimum Occult: 2
  • Minimum Essence: 1
  • Prerequisite Charms: None

Whilst it is unpleasant to do so, this Charm allows Infernals to perceive unmanifested spirits. Should one be visible, the Exalt feels burning pain as her eyes bolt wide open, riveted by fear and loathing and crying blood, milk or some other foul substance. Otherwise, this functions identically to Spirit-Detecting Glance. Predictably, Infernals knowing this Charm develop an understandable antipathy to spirits, gods and elementals in a mirror of their masters. Dematerialised demons aree visible to the users of this Charm, but aren't so painful to behold.

Matters Best Untouched

  • Cost: 6 motes
  • Duration: One scene
  • Type: Simple
  • Minimum Occult: 3
  • Minimum Essence: 2
  • Prerequisite Charms: Horrors Best Unseen

Should the Infernal be driven to do so, this Charm allows Infernals to touch, interact with and attack unmanifested spirits. Every time she does so, aching pain coarses up her limbs as oil, tar or some other foul substance wells beneath her fingernails and drips down. This Charm remains in effect for an entire scene and may not be a part of a Combo, but is otherwise identical in effect to Spirit-Cutting Attack.

Deeds Best Undone

  • Cost: 12 motes
  • Duration: One scene
  • Type: Simple
  • Minimum Occult: 5
  • Minimum Essence: 3
  • Prerequisite Charms: Matters Best Untouched

A sufficiently devoted Infernal may learn this Charm in order to allow it to strike and permanently destroy spirits and gods. Whilst the Charm is in effect, the Infernal’s attacks deal aggravated damage to unmaterialised spirits and will kill them permanently if they are slain. However, each blow is accompanied by icy pain in the Exalt’s heart, and mucus, pus or some other foul liquid ebbs from stigmata across her chest.

Perverted Eye Technique

  • Cost: 6 motes
  • Duration: One scene
  • Type: Simple
  • Minimum Occult: 5
  • Minimum Essence: 2
  • Prerequisite Charms: Horrors Best Unseen

With the use of this Charm, an Infernal can see warps in the structure and shape of Creation about him. She may instantly perceive the ripples caused by demons and Infernals as the fragments of Malfeas seal them away from proper existence in this world, and they can see the effects of Sidereal astrology at work. Furthermore, they can see the shifts and manipulations of Essence at work in Charms and sorcery, making them readily identified.

Shattered Soul Sutra seems a royally heinous ability. Fits well in Power Gaming Groups. The only real grief i have so far is it's prerequisites. You can't, traditionally, have a Lore 6 and an Essence 5, you need Essence 6 to get Lore 6. That's pretty much it, and I absolutely LOVE the imagery! - grypph

Endowment or other funky tricks can allow you to step around that, can't it?...

I would probably allow the Prodigy (Occult) Merit to fulfill the requirement, too, even though technically it's not supposed to be able to do things like that. ~ G
Seconded.

The prerequisites are designed to be in line with a number of other pinnacle Charms featured in canon Caste books, if memory serves accurately. It's definately powerful, but sorcery should be an Infernal schtick. Hopefully, I've been successful in balancing the Charm trees to demonstrate this...DeathBySurfeit

Might want to add, in Horrors Best Unseen, that seeing dematerialized demons doesn't hurt (unless it does, though I don't see why it would). Summoned demons can be told to stay dematerialized, which is why I make this comment. In any case, while I really like these rules, have you seen what kind of sorcery Dukantha in Blood and Salt can dish out? I know he's an Akuma, while these are actual Infernal Exalted... but I see a real similarity in the play on power-level getting downgraded (like you did with these). ~ Seiraryu

Duly noted and tweaked. I haven't got Blood & Salt to hand, so I'll have to get back to you on the Dukantha debate shortly...DeathBySurfeit
Glad to help. ~ Seiraryu

He has Infernal Sorcery, which is basically sorcery up to solar circle. He gets no special sorcerous powers... same cost and time. However, he DOES get to call Kimberry partially into the world, or suck the world into Kimberry. I would state those are merits, however, and anyway, it's hardly above a custom solar circle spell do do the stuff he can. Heck, look at the void circle necro-stuff for an example. The top end of sorcery isn't topped easily, honest. it's his Infernal Resilience power that seems most broken.

Actually, I was refering more to the fact that Dukantha is a Terrestrial and has Solar-level Sorcery. It gives something to think about, really. I mean, that's two levels above what he should be able to do. ~ Seiraryu
