:Why does a breastplate offer more protection against lethal damage than against bashing?

Breastplates and Greek-style hoplite armor or Japanese light armor (both of which fall under "reinforced breastplate") are armor focussed around providing vitals protection. They stay light and flexible by limiting the protected areas to the stuff you really can't live without. Thus, the bashing soak is low.
