She was born in Onyx, capital city of the Skullstone Archipalego, to a merchant family. There she lived until the age of 16, when she was Exalted. This caused the Bodhisattva Anointed By Dark Waters some consternation, owing to the fact that he's a Deathlord and the Solar's sworn enemy and all that stuff, blah blah blah. So, he kidnaps her family and holds them hostage, threatening to kill them unless Hai Ling swore an oath witnessed by his Moonshadow Caste deathknight to obey him until death and beyond. She, terrified out of her mind at this point, fled. Then, the Bodhisattva killed her family. And not only did he make their souls into a soulsteel dagger, he turned their bodies into vastly powerful Harrowers, zombies formed by the necromantic fusion of several dead bodies and artifacts into an unstoppable killing machine that can track the Essence of their target across all of Creation, and sent them after her. They are, however, only zombies, and can only travel by foot. So, she had a significant head start as she caught a boat off the island, and by a variety of methods made her way to the mountainous forests of the North-East. By this time, she was starving, penniless, exhausted, and feelin' pretty darn guilty about the deaths of her family. It was in this state she was discovered by a secretive academy of ninjas who had one of their fortress-monasteries in that mountain range. Once she demonstrated her Exalted prowess, they agreed to let her live, on the condition that she swear an oath in blood to the clan. She did so, feeling it was a bargain, and for the next six years she was trained in the ways of the ninja. Being a Night Caste, she learned fast. After that time, she was sent to their Greyfalls office, and worked there as a novice for a further three years. After that time, she attained journeyman status and moved to Nexus. She remains there at the current time.

She is about 5'3", of slender build, with golden skin, jet-black hair she wears in those two buns on the side of the head with the braids coming down (like that main character from Sailor Moon), and emerald eyes. And she paints her nails black and almost always looks gloomy, even when she's happy.

She likes dogs, pineapple, strawberries, and the color purple.

She hates hypocrites and mean people. She also subconsciously hates happy families, because if hers died, what right does anybody else have to have one?

She is a very caring and kind person, but taking her Second Breath has amplified her already formidable towering teenage arrogance. She does not take kindly to people disagreeing with her and views almost everything she does as right, simply because she is Chosen of the Sun. She is highly independent and will usually refuse help if it is offered, and will never accept charity.

Her Anima Banner, when iconic, resembles a gigantic spiderweb stretching into infinity behind her.
