== CONSTRUCTION UNDERSTANDINGS: THE POWER OF ARTIFICE ==

Savant's Soul
Requirements: Any Crafts at 2, Kismet 1
Prerequisites: None
This Understanding enables a character to construct Artifacts. After purchasing this Understanding, all Artifact construction rules may now be used by the character. In addition, the character must choose a single Defect. This is a single situation under which her Artifact do not function, or can be stopped, and it may be as broad or as narrow as the player wishes. For example, the Sage Lykor's artifacts cannot function if they are touching red objects, as the colour interferes with their light crystals. The Great Kordinsky's many warwalkers will not function if their bearers are not good of heart (Compassion 3+). More disturbingly, Elias of Treas's artifacts can only be used if their would-be wielder has killed a human in the last month, and Hagrave Bloodaxe's creations will not function at all in the hands of anyone except pureblood Easterners. These can be simply flavour, or they can be highly restrictive, but the character must use the same Defect for all artifacts they create.

Natural Genius
Requirements: Any Crafts at 3, Kismet 2
Prerequisites: Savant's Soul
Savants sometimes find that they are noticeably better at working the occult principles of their creations than they are at anything else. The character chooses a single specialty, such as Close Combat Weapons, Airships, Furniture, or Lightning-Powered-Devices. The character gains a number of automatic successes equal to her Kismet halved (round up) on each roll made to construct such devices. This Understanding may be purchased once per dot of Kismet that the character possesses; each time, she chooses a new specialty.

Breadth of Understanding
Requirements: Any Crafts at 3, Kismet 3
Prerequisites: Savant's Soul
Some characters find new and innovative ways to succeed. When this Understanding is purchased, the character may immediately create two new Defects for herself. She may apply any one, many, or all of her Defects to a given Artifact, but she must Research or Design it again if changing Defects. The character may purchase additional Defects at a cost of 2 XP apiece.

The Many Are As One
Requirements: Any Crafts at 5, Kismet 5
Prerequisites: Genius At Work
The true masters of artificery care not what complexity their artifact is. This Understanding permanently enhances any roll to construct any types of artifacts that the character has purchased Natural Genius for. The character reduces external penalties to create those artifacts by half her Kismet (rounded up), to a minimum of 0.
