This background represents characters that have been formally educated in thaumaturgy at a dedicated school such as the Heptagram.

While I have no problem with the system in Exalted 2nd edition I didn’t like how necessary it was to spend additional bonus points on thaumaturgy given that it's weak compared to most occult charms and most importantly that many exalt sorcerers are supposed to have had knowledge of it before learning Terrestrial Circle sorcery.

If anyone running a mortals game would be willing to test this background I'd be much obliged.

x- You have no formal training or simply have no time for the mortal arts 
1 dot- You are merely an apprentice with but a single ritual committed to memory. 
2 dots- Your training is almost complete, you posses knowledge of 2-3 rituals. 
3 dots- You are officially trained with an Initiate Degree in your chosen art. 
4 dots- You've been formally trained to Adept level. 
5 dots- You have a Master Degree and awakened essence if you don't already posses it.

In short I’m attempting to make it a little more viable for players to follow the fluff where most sorcerers began learning minor essence manipulation before undergoing the five ordeals.

+Thaumaturgy is a background like any other- each dot invested in this background provides the knowledge of a single degree and 3-4 suitable procedures. In addition to this here is an additional benefit. Once per story a character’s level with this background can be used to provide a bonus to social interactions that directly involve their knowledge of the arts. A 5 dot thaumaturge would have substantially more luck at warning a king of an ill omen in the stars than his 3 dot counterpart would in the same situation.
