Each one contains a piece of knowledge, words or a picture etched on its surface, or speech resonating in its facets. No man can learn what is inside, for they move too fast to read and hear, and hands that reach to grasp the shards are often frozen and shattered or shorn apart. There is no hostility in this act, only the unstoppable progress of Laksandr's thought processes.

At the heart of the storm, there is a pulsing heart of light. When the shards that whip furiously around this place reach the center, they pass through this light, and the words appear across the sky, spoken words thunder across the frozen storm, and images briefly come to life. Then they disappear, and the shard emerges and is taken up once more by the brutal storm.

These shards are the thoughts and memories of Laksandr, and the pulsing light is the Defining Soul of Air itself. As each thought passes through him, he thinks it, and so does he remember every memory. In the storm that surrounds him, thoughts and memories collide, and they chip away at each other, shattering upon lines of deduction, until what is left behind is the only possible truth, razor-honed. With each new thought, a shard emerges from the light and joins the storm. Laksandr does nothing but think, every second, every day, every year. Certainly, his insights are grand, for he has had thousands of years to discern secrets merely by logical deduction, though exactly what he has figured out is a mystery that Jupiter will not tell, or does not know. He listens to the winds that howl from the north, bringing news from all corners of Creation, and forgets nothing.

There is a story told, that in the days before the uprising of the Gods, that Laksandr and Florivet were close. Certainly, in those days Orabilis' Wisdom Soul was a scholar, not a scoundrel. Some suggest that the two, as Second Circle Souls and equals, were lovers, but others point out that the Whim-of-the-Wind prefers the company of women, and despite his current shape, few sources cite the Tempest of Thought as anything but male. The story goes on to say that one of the shards of Adamant was given to Florivet as a gift, and it was from this that he created the Agata. Other stories say that the thought was stolen, instead, and that the Beauteous Wasps are thus an abomination to Creation and forever render Laksandr incomplete.

Whatever the nature of the story, they agree that while Laksandr must wait in the furthest reaches of the north, that Florivet will some day seek him out. Most stories say on that day that Laksandr's storm will become greater still, and he will tear to pieces the ancient demon. Perhaps the stories of Florivet's theft are true. Perhaps the war was too much for their relationship to bear. Or perhaps Florivet has changed too much, either in his imprisonment or his degeneracy. But a few tales end differently: the storm will die, and the thoughts and dreams and wishes and memories will return to their heart, and there Laksandr will be, ready to greet an old friend.

=== Echthros, the Rip in the World-cloth ===
The Demon Echthros, Third Soul of the Ebon Dragon, appears most often as a man clad in black robes. This raiment goes beyond the pitch that even the greatest dyers in the world can manage, and in it one can see nothing but perhaps half-remembered snippets of their own nightmares. Looking beyond this, one could perhaps dismiss the one who wears these robes as being a normal man, as he has a noted preference for smoked glasses and speaks rarely. Should his spectacles be removed, though, one will see pits of darkness where he has eyes. There are not even sockets in those depths, but the yawning blackness that is his true nature. Should he open his mouth, one will see a similar gate to the abyss.

Another form of his, found only in rumor, is that of a massive, raiton-shapped mass of the void.

Among the inhabitants of Malfeas, Echthros is one of the few who truly comprehends the nature of the Malfeans, and knowing this, he is perhaps one of the few who truly supports their ultimate goals. For Echthros hates Creation, being made of something wholly outside of it.

Creation, for its part, rejects Echthros such that even the summoning of him by a solar exalt is difficult, and requires the summoner to sacrifice that which he holds most dear to himself. This is consumed by Echthros upon his arrival; several sorcerors in the first age went mad, wondering what they had given up to summon the Rip in the World-cloth.

Powers: Anything that Echthros consumes is stricken from the memory of Creation and Yu-shan, so much so that even the closest friends and family of one so disposed of will be unable to concieve of the existence of such a person. Not even Marthesine could aid in the recovery of such forgotten things, for they have utterly ceased to exist. Mortals and objects can be annihilated with little more than a sideways glance. Exalts must be physically slain, first, to so destroy either themselves or objects attuned to them. The only restriction, in the end, is that the target be manifest; ideas and concepts are beyond his power. He may also strip armies of their passions and will, leaving them unable to rally or fight. Finally, it is rumored that like Marthesine, he may return what he has consumed. He will admit that there is indeed truth to this belief, if summoned and questioned, but the conditions are twofold. First, the object (or person) being recovered must be named both in self and relationship to the sorceror, and second, something of greater value must be offered.

===== Of That Before Creation =====

Before the making of Creation, there were the Primordials in the Wyld. Nothing precedes this--time exists only within Creation and those things branching from it, and so there is no history definable as such within the Wyld before the meeting of selves between Gaia and Cytherea. In this non-time and non-place, there were many Primordials, and those Primordials rose and fell, accumulating and losing souls until they vanished into the Wyld as smoke on the wind.

Of these Primordials there is no record save in their fellows, and they shall be spoken of no more.

===== Of the Making of Creation =====

Of the causes and reasons of the union of Gaia and Cytherea there is little known. To the minds of men, the will and actions of the Primordials seems erratic and strange, but it is enough to know that it happened. There was intimacy, but none of the raw physical contact that gross material bodies desire. There was ecstasy, but not the release known to men and gods.

The Song of the Beginning of the World was glorious. Never again will it be sung, and this all the Gods know. Into the shapless, spaceless, timeless chaos of the Wyld, Cytherea brought forth space, and time, and unto this new Where and unsullied When, Gaia laid down the foundation of Creation in Earth, and upon that she brought forth her passions and joys with Water, Air, Fire, and Wood.

===== Of the Sacrfice of Gaia and Cytherea =====

Having formed Creation, it was then that Gaia laid down her five souls within the world, as tent-pegs to still the ground and posts to support the canopy of the sky. Thus were all five of her souls claimed, and bound within that which she and her sister had created, and it was this that kept her there, for she felt bound to the world, responsible for it. She wandered it herself, bringing life as she went, and placed the souls of her souls so as to imbue the world more fully with her Essence.

Cytherea, too, placed something of herself in the world, charging one of her souls to ever play the harp named Time, arming Creation with seconds and hours alien to the Wyld, so as to better defend itself. This soul she cleft from herself, wishing not to be so bound to this world as her sister. This lost soul she placed in a cave near the peak of the Omphalos, where it would ever be safe, and thus was Creation defined.

===== Of the Sacrifices of Other Primordials =====

The other Primordials, too, struck something of themselves away so as to better keep Creation. Several cast away a soul, but none was so drastic as Empyrium, who cast from himself his heart, Sol, so as to grant light, clarity, and sharpness to Creation. What his aim was in so doing is unknown--some say he wished to win Gaia's affections, but such ideas are often for those who do not understand the hearts and souls and wills of a Primordial.

What is known is that when that which had been Empyrium, now Cibola, beheld his new heart, he named it Huitzilopochtli, and kept it close to himself.

In doing thus, the first Celestines were defined, and they were to rule over the Gods.

Content that Creation and her souls embedded therein were safe, Gaia ascended into Yu-shan, though she would never couple again with Cytherea, and began to play the Games of Divinity. Alone among the Primordials, Autochthon remained behind, for though he had shaped the Games of Divinity and much of Yu-shan was of his own design, his brothers and sisters shunned his company.

Alone, he began to shape.

Of Autochthon and the crafting of the Mountain Folk, much is already written, and so I shall write no more here.

===== Of the Song of Cytherea's Lost Soul =====

Cytherea's once-soul sat in his cave, and he played but one song, and that was the song of Time. Each finger struck each note with the rush of sand through an hourglass, and the distinct and deliberate clarity of clocks that would not be constructed for thousands of years to come.

He played it to the north, and to the west, and then he played it to the mountain in which he sat, and then to the east, and to the south. And then he would turn, and begin again. Thrice in each direction, the melody of time would build from near-silence to a deafening roar, and then die down to quiet, and thus were the seasons and the months within them defined.

===== Of How Cytherea's Lost Soul Came to Behold Creation =====

In these days, the Sun was that which shone in the sky, and he and he alone stood and ever danced in light. The maidens arranged the fall and play of events, but they did this behind the canopy of the sky which Sol illuminated.

There came a point, where that being who had once been Cytherea's soul had played his song to the south, when his cave was filled with light as the Sun descended, and Sol said "Enough! I am weary, let me rest here." The soul consented, but he saw beyond Sol, and darkness was on the surface of Creation save for the trace of silver in the sky. He looked back to the sun, and said "May I dance in the sky in your stead? I may not shine as brilliantly, but certainly you would not let the world go dark."

And Sol, weary, waved his hand dismissively. "Then go." He said, and so Luna who had been Cytherea's Soul went out into the World, playing as he went.

He played over the north for a short time, and he saw the fight for dominance between a pair of wolves.

He played over the west, and he saw shark's eggs hatching in the ebb and flow of the tides.

He played for a very brief time around the Blessed Isle, and he saw foxes mating.

He played in the west, and saw the fall of acorns from tall trees.

He played in the south, and saw a dried and withered plant waiting for rain to be green again.

He saw all these things, all the results of passing time, of hours and days and months and years, and his heart was full of wonder. His song was mighty, and the seconds fell past like mayflies until the Sun emerged to brighten the sky again. "Enough." He said. "I am rested, and may shine again. Return to your cave, player of Time."

===== Of How Luna Came to Behold Gaia =====

And Luna's despair was terrible as he returned to the cave, and even as he played the seconds became dreary, all the more mourning for that which he had seen but for a few scant days.

And none of the Primordials heard it, save Autochthon, who did not heed it. None of the souls of the Primordials above heard it, for they all took their pleasures in Yu-shan. The Celestines heard it, but did not complain, for the Maidens were otherwise occupied, and the sun, fresh and rested, danced as lightly as ever.

Gaia's souls, the Five Elemental Dragons, listened alone, and they despaired. The five souls surrounding each wept, and thus Gaia's Essence became sadness, and she could not wholly enjoy the games.

She set foot on the Omphalos, intending to destroy the source of her displeasure. She heard the song, loud and mournful, from within the cave, and into there she stalked.

And there Luna sat, still playing, and it was at this closeness that Gaia heard what lay beneath the sadness, a profound love for the life he saw on that world, that the Time he played called into being and dismissed. It was at this praise that she hesitated, and in that pause that Luna's downcast gaze looked up at the newcomer.

In that moment, when he saw within her not just the cyclical dance of life but the rise and fall of fire and the ebb and flow of tides and the transient gust of wind and the staunch, almost impudent immovable stance of stone, he played perfectly. Every second that preceded it, and every second after, has been but an echo of that one perfectly measured moment, and perhaps it was then that Gaia saw something of what she had felt for Cytherea in this lesser being.

He could not devote the attention he wished upon Gaia, for his attention was forced to remain upon the harp that he played. Still, the touch on Luna's shoulder was bliss, and the kiss on his forehead was ecstasy. Her promise to return was joy that no word in any tongue has ever been able to contain.

===== Of Autochthon and the Making of Humanity =====

Now it was that Autochthon discovered that the Mountain Folk he had crafted had made more of their own, and he displayed these in pride to his siblings at the gates of Yu-shan. They scorned him, and made crude imitations--humans--and set them upon the surface of creation to reproduce in such ways as living things do.

Autochthon was wrathful, but Gaia--though she had no particular love for the humans--claimed them as her creatures as she had the Dragon Kings whom Cibola had placed upon her lands, and so the Great Maker was forced to still his anger.

Instead, he suggested that they be placed as subordinate to the peoples already in existence--his Mountain Folk, and Cibola's Dragon Kings. He had no love for the latter, but they were an occasionally savage people, and hardy. Certainly, time and hardship would wear the humans down, and show them useless, if there were anything left to show.

And instead, they thrived.

===== Of Humans =====

None would call humans a superior race. There were--and are--faster, stronger, smarter, more clever, more alluring peoples. Their lives were short, only rarely reaching a century, and alone among the intelligent peoples they had no innate talent for channeling Essence.

Somehow, crafted on a cruel whim as they were with no thought as to what might become of them, the humans were still intelligent. They could be taught to manipulate Essence to a degree. And they could breed--not with the Dragon Kings, but with much else: gods, the souls of Primordials--even with the Mountain Folk that claimed Autochthon. These hybrid peoples were stronger and smarter than those who had come before, and had an easier grasp of Essence.

Humans were potentially, in short, useful tools and materials, and in that realization Autochthon's anger abated, for there is little the Great Maker loves more.

----

Of the rise of the gods and what has come after, much is known, and I shall not speak of it here.

Of the nature of [[Mockery/Gaia_And_Her_Souls | Gaia and Her Souls]] there is much secret that must be told, but that must be detailed elsewhere.

Records show that Liduro, Third Guard of the Omphalos, saw but Red and Green and Yellow and Blue in the stars. The sun flooded the sky immediately afterward, and we did not wonder. We did not question. Perhaps it was already too late.

It was noon of the third day when Jupiter left. She simply set one piece down, and then stepped away, without a word. It was her way, of course, and we do not know why she left, even today. Perhaps she simply knew. We did not care, of course, and the game continued.

Then on the fourth day, at dawn, the Maiden of Battles left. She sharpened her sword, and wandered into the city. History shows that she was there, and she fell in the end.

"Love has failed us. Peace is gone. Sadness is what is mine now, and it shall be yours soon enough. I declare this game to be completed." Three hours before the tolling of the jade bell that signals the new year, Venus stood, and walked away from the board. Her smile was bittersweet, the smile of an unpleasant future welcomed.

The Games continued to work, but even in the throes of ecstasy, the gods looked at Mercury closely. Her moves were calm and premeditated, and the Sun and Moon and Gaia were careful in their movements, and this caution cost them. The sky shone with golden stars.

Finally, the Sun looked at Mercury, her eyes glimmering yellow. "Why are you still here? Why have your sisters left?"

Mercury glanced at the board, and her pieces moved of their own accord. "Serenity has given you her reasons already. There are battles to be fought, and so Mars has gone. Jupiter knows all this, and left before us."

"And what of Saturn?" Asked Luna, and he seemed to push into Gaia, seeming more her child than her consort.

And Mercury told them.

----

The bell rang, and the Unconquered Sun hurled himself out of the games. He streaked like the yellow flame he was across the sky, bleaching the heavens light, and for once the sun in all his glory shone over the city of Yu-shan.

But at this stroke of midnight, he stopped. He stood in midair, over the Bureau of Destiny, and before him were two figures. One was the Maiden of Endings herself, shining lavender, her essence coruscating around her as though she were a mere Exalt. The other was a man not seen in Yu-shan for thousands of years. He was so old that none dared speak his name in this place, and even the Unconquered Sun hesitated.

He did not look old that old. He seemed middle-aged, his hair the shining yellow of brass, and his eyes and mouth trailing viridian fire. His skin was dark like Iron, the lines in his face perhaps fissures between pieces of metal, and he seemed full of hate for both his summoner and the one before him. Armor of brass and flesh wrapped around him, shifting of its own accord.

Saturn looked across the whole of the city, the thousands of miles it spanned, and turned to her companion. There was no hate in her voice, even as she spoke words as deadly as the Silent Wind, and nearly as quiet.

"End it." She said.

There was no moment in between. For a moment he was a man. And then he was a cascade of brass and meat, streaking down pieces of himself upon the city. Fire lanced from a gaping pit where his face had been, and gods who had lived shorter lifespans than a mortal fell like game.

One of these consumed the Maiden Saturn, the first victim of the ending she had wrought.

Mars was at the ready, and her forces charged against the invader summoned by her sister. She had to have known what would happen, but she did. Nothing had changed in so many thousand years. Oaths were still binding, still a part of her and the Gods. She forsook that oath, and struck with her sword, cleaving deeply, only to cease to exist in the same instant.

Did Jupiter do anything? Was she IN Yu-shan? I do not know. She may yet live.

Venus stood atop the tallest tower of Heaven, and it is said she wept a tear of glittering starmetal as she fell, and that it seared our attacker when it fell. Perhaps it did, but it saved none.

The Unconqered Sun is as great a mystery as the maiden of Secrets. Some say he broke his oath as Mars did, only to cease to be. Some say he fled, or was captured. Perhaps he is dead.

In the end, there were a handful of gods in the Dome of the Games. Mercury was still there, having thoroughly monopolized the board. Gaia and Luna were there. One of them asked Mercury again, why was she still here? Did the future say that this place would be untouched? Would the demon city outside leave this place unscathed?

Mercury looked up, and the pieces whirled in the air like the stars. "He is outside of Fate." She said. "I cannot know what he shall do. Still, I can suppose." She smiled, and the sound of screams echoed from outside. "He will ruin the streets, and the rivers shall run with vitriol. But this place shall stand. He will look at this place, and want to play. But he will know us, inside, and the Games were what drove our lord to revolt in the first place. Whatever the monster he is, he is a stronger thing than us, for being broken. He will destroy this dome, and us with it."

There was utter silence. None dared argue with her, and none dared move, as though by holding still, they might bind time itself and not let it move forward.

"But I could be wrong." She said, and those words shattered the silence and the stillness.

I do not know if there was relief. There was a din, though, moments later. The monstrosity outside had turned his attention to the dome of the Games, and the ceiling cracked. The lesser gods still there scattered; bits of stone fell, and chunks of jade older than all of us there save one ground against each other above us, showering us in enough dust to make any mortal rich beyond words.

But why are you still here? She was asked again.

And the Maiden answered. "Why should I run, when I may wait here for the destination to come to me? There is nowhere to run, now. I have nowhere to go."

And there was a rumble, and a piece of the ceiling, engraved with paeans to the old masters of this place, and untouched for fear that it would disrupt the essence flows to the Games, crashed to the ground, and the Maiden of Journeys was no more.

*Yes, I know that the idea of Infernal Exalted as a playable character type--back when such a thing was more of a "DUDE WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF...?" sent me into frothing rage most of the time. Over time, I came to acknowledge that the official execution, when it did come, was interesting and well-done. But there are ideas of what can be done with the[[Mockery/Fifty_Missing_Shards | Fifty Missing Shards]] that have occurred to me. And so here one of them is here. Of course, this is greatly colored by my...darker view of things, about how much the Exalted are capable of and how little Samsara cares, save for that as the Chosen make the world do so.
