As the Crimson Road reaches the southern mountains, it stays level, following a straight pass that looks like it might have been carved from the living stone by giants. If you walk this part of the road, you will find that the walls around you develop impressive worked facades, arches, pillars, and other bas relief engraving. These are the buildings of Petra, the canyon city.

Petra is a miners city. They quarry blocks of sandstone, limestone, and marble, dig for veins of iron and coal, and occasionally find veins of jade and gems. It is also a city of masons and architects. They build statues, carve the facades, bring water from the high mountain lakes and streams, and dig deep mines.

It is not a safe city. While they do what they can, cave-ins are a fact of life here. Orphaned children are often pressed into service in the mines. Some run away or join one of the child gangs. Some join the Immaculate Order.

The Immaculate Order has a temple to Paisap here. The monks have little funding and few Dragon-Blooded, all lost eggs from nameless families. The satrap, Ragara Michiko, cares little for the locals, as long as she gets her cut of the profits. For her house, of course.

The local gods are mostly spirits of earth and stone and craft who have more in common with the elementals of earth than other gods. Mostly. Green-Eyed Seril, She Who Gives Breath in the Dark, and Atet, He of the Bountiful Fields, are notable exceptions. The Order has not been able to keep all of these gods under strict control. The Mother of Earthquakes notably chafes at the agreement, wishing to prevent more cave ins and reap the rewards of worship.

Little land here is suitable for the growing of food. Some have farms on the lowlands outside the pass. Some have farms on the tops of the canyon walls, the soil laboriously carried up there long ago. Most food and wood is brought in by merchants, eager to trade for sandstone and gems.

Petra is a miners city. They quarry blocks of sandstone and marble, dig for veins of iron and coal, jade and gems.

The satrap, Ragara Mei, cares little for the locals, as long as she gets her cut of the profits.

Ashtown
by Moxiane

At the southeasten edge of the city, where the Nexus and Cinnabar districts end at the walls, lies an ill-favoured part of the city which was until recently known as Aston. Prior to the Great Nexus Fire, this was a vibrant neighbourhood, with theatres and museums aplenty. But afterwards, the attention of the Council of Entities was more focussed towards the centre of the city; and so, this area, which was particularly badly struck by the inferno, was left to languish. All of this would have been bad enough were it not for the sudden surge of hungry ghosts that swarmed out of the neighbourhood, ghosts which were somehow hardier than the rest of their ilk, and far more difficult to put down.

The majority of the locals who survived the fire moved out in the years following the destruction, leaving gutted houses and other burned-out buildings for the undesirables of the city to move into – which they did in droves. Less than a year after the holocaust, Ashtown, as it had become known, was a nest of criminals, junkies and other lowlifes, competing with Firewander for general squalor and ambient violence. Early attempts to rebuild this part of the city were met with murder on the part of the new denizens, to the point where contractors and surveyors refused point-blank to enter without mercenaries in at least talon-strength, something that the Council of Entities considered uneconomic; and so a policy of containment regarding Ashtown has been enacted.

Visitors to Ashtown, of which there are few, report that there is a permanent haze in the air and a continual smell of burning that causes significant irritation to the nose and lungs, despite the fires having been out for decades. The hungry ghosts are still a major problem, particularly because they retain the unnatural resilience that caused so many problems in the early days of Ashtown’s existence, and local savants have come to believe that there are at least two small shadowlands within the ruins and rubble.

Sitting on a high hill, the walled city of Unione guards one end of the ancient pass across the mountains as well as a second route to a source of Firedust. House V'Neef controls this city and its Firedust supply through Satrap V'Neef Vala.

Despite the fact that it lies at one end of the Glass Canal, the First Age mechanisms which allow ships to travel vertically up into the city no longer work. Thus the city has practically no ship traffic. However, the mechanisms that draw up and purify the canal water give the city a vast supply of water which serves as a third source of income, along with the trade route and the firedust/related weapons manufacture.

House V'Neef has taken the unusual step of selling some of their wine through this city and into the south.
During the First Age, the Exalted learned of the world. Some learned how to shape the land to channel it's energy into stones that could provide great power. Some traced the paths this power followed, and found the five places that formed the lynchpins of creation, The Five Elemental Poles. Both groups, The Manse Builders and The Geomancers, as they became known, learned of these Elemental Poles and decided that this power must be harnessed for the benifit of the world. So the greatest of them worked for decades and designed buildings of such grace and strength that they would be capeable of channeling such raw elemental power. In due course the Five Great Manses were built and the Five Pole Harthstones were born.
Comments
Here it is, my page for random stuff I'm working on.
--BrilliantRain

Nexus is the center of the Guild. The Guild HQ is in Nexus. Standard currency? Whatever the Guild uses. Simple. Efficient. And true. --tld

:Yes but the Guild didn't introduce the silver standard until about 30 years ago, and we have no idea what they used before that. It would seem odd to me that Nexus wouldn't have it's own currency frome before that period.
--BrilliantRain

::It also makes sense that the silver standard was the currency of Nexus before the Guild officially established their base there - also makes things again, more efficient and simple. On another note, tho silver may have been the currency used in Nexus before Guild - the value of that money was very different and the values of imported goods were very different. So tho silver money was used (not the paper versions I'm sure) in a sense it was essentially an altogether different currency.
However, since Nexus is a preserved First Age city with a strong mystical bend to it, it might have been that the scavenger lords that held trade before the Guild was formed used First Age or Shogunate era coins(possibly Jade). --tld

:::I guess you can look at it that way, if you want to keep things simple. However, Manacle and Coin gives the impression that silver coinage is a very recent development created by the Guild. This doesn't mean that there might not have been Jade versions of the silver coins, or even that Nexus really doesn't have it's own coinage, as it has no government. Seriously, the council claims not to be a government. Anyway, I percived a void and filled it. If you are perfectly happy using Guild Silver, who am I to say no?
--BrilliantRain

::::So is the Euro, and I'd challenge you to find a merchant in even the most "rural" part of Euro-using Europe that will accept, say, francs, lira, and spanish pesos as currency anymore. There are colllectors, and they will pay collection-scale prices, but one has to seek them out, as they aren't relatively common. An older Nexus currency, thus might have existed (though it would have been provided by the Guild, as the Council of Entities would be far more likely to view minting such a currency as being far too "government"-like), but it would no longer be in use with the Guild's currency reforms in place. Thus, any "Nexan" coinage or script would be more of a collector's item or (increasingly) an antiquity.
Also, the Guinea as a SIXTEEN pound bar of jade?! The guinea in the British monetary system, before it's "decimalization", was not anywhere NEAR so much! (The pound was money worth one pound of Stirling silver; the guinea was a gold coin worth one pound one shilling, effectively the same amount, but with the guinea MUCH more portable.) Yes, the names of the other currency amounts are derived from real-world currencies, but the relative values/weights were kept, generally, close to the real-world inspirations. Yes, a talent really was a freaking HUGE amount of silver. (Thus, the New Testament accounts of the rich throwing dozens and hundreds of talents of money into the temple treasury becomes even more impressive in comparison with the two mites of the widow. (A mite being a Roman coin that you could fit on the tip of your pinkie, with room to spare...)) Likewise, the Shekel (an amount currently in use as the currency of modern-day Israel), the Obol, the Quian, the Yen, the cut coins called Bits, the Dinar, the Dirham, etc. The florin, by-the-by, was originally (as of 1252) a gold coin first issued in Florence, Italy. Hence the name, though some scholars claim that the english coin derived its name via the word flower, derivative from the lilies minted on the reverse of the coin(which was worth conciderably less, at two shillings). In any event, the coin found wide usage throughout Europe, with local versions being minted.
The authors of M&C did a stunningly good job on their research, and developed an impressive economic framework for most of creation. What's more, they did a good enough job to impress currency and finance geeks like me. ^^ Keep up the good work, but take a closer look at some of your assumptions, and at some of your details. -Suzume

:::::I could answer most of your complaints, but heck with it. It took like 30 minutes to come up with, no-one likes it, and my players don't care. I'll just remove it and forget that I ever created it.
--BrilliantRain

Cangiante
General notes
Cangiante is the city of gates. Of First Age construction, the city is surrounded by and shot through by imperishable walls from fifty to two hundred feet tall, with massive gates in many colors.

Politics
The current Keymaster, inheritor of an ancient bloodline power to control the gates, rules the city. Underneath the Keymaster, various guilds administrate the city's needs, all with the supervision of the House Sesus Satrap.

Sesus Virigila is the Satrap here. She prefers to spend her time on the hunt of the local dangerous wildlife, such as Furnace Rhinos, Hellboar, Bunyip, and Siege Lizards. She leaves the business of government to her clerks, many of whom have been bribed by the locals.

Trade
Cangiante sits on the end of The Slice, where the Crimson Road cuts through the hills to the Great Southern Desert. They are a major trade hub between food and water from the north and the riches of the desert to the south.

The Rightful Assessors of the Divine Proportion, the Guild of Tax Collectors, are under close scrutiny by all the powerful people in the city.

Religion
The city laws require that local religions follow the local Immaculate Calendar. Such ordinances are always enforced in the presence of the Realm.

Ximone, City Goddess of Cangiante, is much loved locally and worshipped as the protector of the city, especially from Lahar, god of the nearby Volcano. She tends not to manifest physically, instead appearing as divine inspiration, a sense of well being, or, on her festival days, a shower of divine sparks and a holy light.

Learning
Due to the wonders of the south that flow through the city and the complex mechanisms of the gates, many alchemists, gear smiths, Thatumaturges, and even some Sorcerers live and study here, crafting further wonders and prodigies from the riches of the desert.

Other
The Black Gates stand perpetually closed. Those who try to get into that section of the city are never heard from again.

Cangiante

General notes: Cangiante is the city of gates. Of First Age construction, the city is surrounded by and shot through by imperishable walls from fifty to two hundred feet tall, with massive gates in many colors.

Politics: The current Keymaster, inheritor of an ancient bloodline power to control the gates, rules the city.

Trade: Cangiante sits on the end of The Slice, where the Crimson Road cuts through the hills to the Great Southern Desert. They are a major trade hub between food and water from the north and the riches of the desert to the south.

The Rightful Assessors of the Divine Proportion, the Guild of Tax Collectors, are under close scrutiny by all the powerful people in the city.

Religion: The city laws require that local religions follow the local Immaculate Calendar.

Learning: Due to the wonders of the south that flow through the city and the complex mechanisms of the gates, many alchemists, gear smiths, Thatumaturges, and even some Sorcerers live and study here, crafting further wonders and prodigies from the riches of the desert.

Other: The Black Gates stand perpetually closed. Those who try to get into that section of the city are never heard from again.

BrilliantRain: Added more of Holden's thoughts on the Shogunate

The Dragon-Blooded Golden Age, aka the Shogunate
The hell it is. The Shogunate portrayed in the Aspect Books is subject to fairly regular collapses and overthrows of the central government, a crumbling infrastructure too complex for them to properly maintain, and constant border warfare with the Fair Folk that ends in defeat or stalemate far too often for anyone's comfort. Not to mention piss-poor relations with Heaven bordering on active obstructionism. The Dragon-Blooded hearken back to it as some kind of rose-tinted golden age because there were way more of them back then, and there was always a war going on to march off and be a hero in, in an ironic tragedy of the commons sort of way, plus they had greater access to cool magitech weapons like Dragon Armor. The Realm has proved itself to be a far more stable and widely prosperous governmental system than the Shogunate ever was, but nobody gets to call himself "Daimyo" so it rankles.

----

Quite a few things.

For starters, if Creation were not at all what it is, history might look quite different.

By which I mean, do you really want your entire culture to have a handful of Celestial gods acting as lynchpins that hold it together? Gods are gods, and always have been—they behave as well as they're forced to.

Putting it another way—Wyld-shaping technique was a premiere producer of the impossibilities the First Age ran on, but not the only one. You can also get, perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot of really powerful mojo from the most powerful denizens of Malfeas. Of course, no Solars means no Solar Circle sorcery, which means you have to bargain with the Unquestionable for their help keeping your infrastructure running.

You can probably identify some problems with making Creation's entire technological infrastructure, particularly its defense network, overly reliant on demons.

Moving on: Yes, you have Essence 7+ Sidereals to work with. Sidereals are chronically over-worked with top-priority business like 'make sure reality doesn't spontaneously melt.' This gets more and more true as they grow older; the Essence 7+ Sidereals have much more vital things they need to be doing than keeping the water purification plants in some city built on a toxic bog in the Southeast working at peak efficiency.

Okay, so now we're down to the Dragon-Blooded and here's where we start running into serious trouble. The Golem-Producing Wonder Factory uses square circles to calibrate its transmotic armor-sculpting armatures, which produces defensive automatons whose outer hull is both flexible and absolutely rigid, making them nimble and hardy fighters. Square circles break down after a while; their impossibility grinds against the mathematical certainties of Creation.

With the Solars gone, there's no reliable way to get more. So after a few years the Wonder Factory's automated production lines shut down. Okay, you're still left with your golem army, but every time the Fair Folk make a sortie against the region, a few of them get destroyed, so their numbers are dropping.

The Terrestrials examine the factory as best they're able. It's fucked; they can't fix it. But maybe they can make more golems by hand? They look into this, and yes, by hook and by crook, they can still hand-assemble these superlative battle golems... but it takes a skilled Terrestrial artisan and his assistants months and months to make a single one. That might slow the rate of loss, but a) you're tying up a technical expert and this is far from the only system experiencing difficulties and b) you're still losing them faster than you can make them.

So the Wonder Factory is closed and scrapped for spare parts. Eventually the golem army gets whittled down enough that it can't effectively protect the entire region; now individual local daimyos begin fighting one another about how to allocate the remaining golems, to best protect their holdings.

Things get worse, though. Every time the Fair Folk manage a breakthrough that eats away at the edges of Creation, that shrinks the world. There's nobody with Wyld-Shaping Technique to go get that land back, much less to actively expand the borders. Moreover, maintaining the land is hard—the Terrestrials are doing their best to uphold the left-over Solar edicts that make up the Order-Conferring Trade Pattern, but they're not up to actually understanding the system in its totality. When the raksha start punching holes in the pattern, the best they can do is make educated guesses about how to compensate and reroute trade networks. It doesn't always work properly, and so the stabilizing network that holds Creation's borders together slowly but steadily weakens.

A Skywolf-class aerial battle cruiser crashes during a battle with the 118th raksha air kraken division. Well, that's okay--that technology is fully within the understanding of the Shogunate, they can replace it, right? Well... yes, but. Gathering up the enormous amounts of required materials is hard, because most of the teleport gateways that were the apogee of Solar technology got broken in the Usurpation and nobody has been able to get any of them back up and running, much less build new ones. Others are being taken offline all the time because they are titanic Essence hogs and that energy could be better used on other things. So, getting the mountains of jade and other construction materials to the build site takes much longer than it would have in the First Age. Then designing the ship takes longer than it would have with Solars overseeing the project. Then building it takes much longer, especially because some of the automated factory-cathedrals are offline. What might have taken six months to roll out in the First Age takes ten years for the Shogunate to put together. This is assuming it's a priority project--it could easily take even longer. Remember, Dragon-Blooded crafting-speed multiplication Charms are awful.

Sidereals have decent speed-multipliers, but there are 100 Sidereals, many of them have zero Craft Charms, and how many priority projects like this do you think are going on across the entire world at once?

Shit! The Fair Folk forced a major breach in Mavais Prefecture! The entire city of Burnished Hope is lost-- and they're turning around its wave motion cannon to fire it into the heart of the South! Deploy the Soulbreaker Orb!

Well, whew. That worked. We recaptured the city and broke the raksha army. Anybody know how to make a replacement orb?

Crap.

What, we only have two left for this border sector? But that covers the territory of five different daimyos, who's going to have those remaining orbs stocked in their arsen... oh, they're going to war again.

Well, maybe the gods can help us get another one cobbled together. Dispatch a team of priest-diplomats.

Hey, they're back. What did Yu-Shan say?

They said what?

I'd have to summon a Neomah for that to even be anatomically possible.

In essence, the Shogunate would have probably stabilized at some point significantly above where we are now, but somewhat beneath the Autochthonians, if they'd managed to quit fighting themselves all the time. And if Heaven hadn't steadfastly refused to acknowledge the worldly authority of the Terrestrials. But "Heaven consistently tells the Shogunate to go fuck itself" and "Creation continually experiences cycles of widespread civil war and partial collapse of its bureaucratic and governmental infrastructure, often in the form of violent coups" are pretty much the defining features of the Shogunate.

So, the Shogunate would have been much more stable if it were not the Shogunate.

The Great Contagion did not come in and kick apart a healthy system that was stabilizing toward a sustainable state of equilibrium and renewal. The Shogunate was not something the Sidereals had under control. The Contagion just kicked the feet out from under a juggler who was already careening around, dropping balls like mad.

----

The interesting thing is that modern Dragon-Blooded look back to the Shogunate as kind of the 'golden age' of their people—that was the apex of their accomplishment, when Dragon Armor was standard kit and every direction had multiple aerial battle fleets and Creation was divided up among proud and mighty daimyos and their associated gentes. It was a grander age, and everywhere there was war and heroism!

The truth of the matter is that the Realm has proven itself a far more stable and effective institution than the Shogunate ever did. The Realm has not experienced periodic collapse of its central government. Peasants do not starve in the interior, nor are its lands wracked by constant war. It has successfully stabilized and maintained Creation, and at this point, the Realm has actually lasted longer than the Shogunate did (assuming that you reasonably don't count Lookshy).

But the peasants don't have Essence lighting and only a couple of rich eccentrics have robot servants and there isn't much dragon armor to go around. Boo.

Of course, now it's all crumbling with the Empress gone, but it also presents opportunity—the Realm is the first time since Merela that Creation has been unified under a single, strong ruler that wasn't constantly getting assassinated. The Realm is culturally accustomed to the idea of a long-lived, fairly unchallengeable ruler, as opposed to playing musical thrones. The Empress hobbled her own creation by designing it first with an eye toward her own security; the Realm's current boundaries represent the limits of her ability to control her territories in a totalitarian fashion. Her vacant throne presents a ready-made opportunity for someone else to pick up the most stable empire Creation has ever seen and to try to take it in a better, less selfish direction.

Or to just become Empress Mk II. Up to the stories you tell.

Karaka Village is a small farming community that raises citrus fruit and soybeans. Like most villages it is built like a fort, with an exterior wooden palisade surrounding the homes of the villagers, with the fields and orchards outside. Outside the cleared fields is a forest, home to deer, squirrels, rabbits, a variety of birds, and, of course, wolves. Possibly a bear or two. The predators tend to keep to the inner parts of the forest save for the colder months. As this village isn't situated on a direct trade route, the local bandit groups have mostly passed it by, though they too get hungry during the winter.

The current village Elder is a woman named Benificent Mist, a grandmotherly old woman, who runs the village with kindness, understanding, and a level of psychological insight into her people that almost qualifies her for assassination. Now, while everyone agrees that Mist is a very wise woman (if they know what's good for them), the local midwife/shaman is, somewhat unusually, a middle-aged man named Sagacious Forest. When he arrived ten years ago, he was regarded somewhat suspiciously, but due to his hard work, diligent efforts, and a bit of luck, he finally managed to win over their trust a few months ago. He handles any supernatural situations that crop up, as well as helping out with the orchard.

They worship the local Goddesses of the trees and fields, in a fairly standard way, exchanging prayer and the occasional sacrifice for good harvests. Forest makes sure they don't get too greedy, playing them off each other.

It's production seems to have dropped off a bit in recent months however. The trade town nearby, Amber Garden, has assumed that the harvest has been a bit off. The Eye is not so sure. You should be prepared for potential issues with the local gods.

Agent Copper Hill is a mortal field agent who commonly serves as discrete transport for documents and agents in the Thorns area. His cover is that of a merchant and minor smuggler. We're fairly certain that his cover is still intact. (Yes, there's a picture of him. Rather good looking, in a forgettable way.)

Mission Briefing
Good Morning Iselsi-san. An agent of the Eye was carrying some important documents and information over the border between Marukan and Thorns, but he vanished before delivering it. His trail was lost near the small village of Karaka in Thorns territory. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find out what happened to the agent and recover both him and his information. This message will self destruct in five seconds.
